My favorite drink is milk. I like milk because it tastes so good. You can drink it with just about anything, It is very good for you too, it has vitamin D, and other healthy stuff in it. Have you ever eaten a piece of say chocolate cake and not have any milk? It is almost like drinking a Coke or something with it, because it would not be the same without a good cold glass of moo juice. Another reason it like milk is you can do so many things with it, such as make homemade ice cream, sounds good on a hot day doesn`t it. Milk does the body good, so the commerical goes and its true. But you know too much of a good thing can make you fat and sassy, so try drinking 2% milk it`s not as fatten and doesn`t have the same rich taste as whole milk.

One of best thing you can do with milk is dunk your favorite cookies in them. I love it when the cookies get so soaked that they almost fall apart in to the glass. Another thing milk is good with is one of my favorites, the basic peanut butter and jelly sandwich, now thats good eating. If you like a change of pace try some cornbread and milk, its almost like dessert without the frosting or iceing, to some people it may sound gross, but I guess different stokes for different folks. When it comes to drinking milk with spicy food such as hot peppers nothing cools off your mouth better than milk.

I guess it must be from my childhood were I get the love for milk. To this day I still see myself sitting at the kitchen table with my mother and having milk and cookies with her. Now that I am grown I miss those days sometimes, but with each glass of milk I`m reliving some of my childhood. Until next time remember milk does the body good.

I was raised in a household where golf was always being watched on the television, and every time my Dad and my Grandfather had a chance to be at the golf course, they were there. This brings me to being familiar with the famous golfer, Phil Mickelson. He isn’t just a famous golfer as we know him, but more importantly a father, husband, and son. Sadly, Phil Mickelson has been overwhelmed with breast cancer in the family lately. It first started with his wife, who had surgery 2 weeks ago. Now, to add to that, his mother has the same type of cancer, and is planning to undergo surgery at the same center his wife received her care.

I have a degree in Radiation Therapy Technology, and I worked with cancer patients for over two years. I also had the great opportunity of treating my Grandmother for breast cancer. I am a huge breast cancer awareness advocate. Breast cancer of course is breast cancer, but there are different breast cancer diseases. Some are more severe than others, and age has a great impact on the results and survival rate of a patient. It is said that if one is diagnosed under the age of forty, the survival rate is not as great as one over the age of forty. In this case, Mary Mickelson has a much greater survival rate than Amy Mickelson since she is only thirty seven years old.

Cancer is something no one wants to face, but at the same time, no one wants to ignore it. The reality of it is surreal. We all face struggles as we grow old; it’s just the way of life. Fortunately for Phil, finances are not going to be a problem for his wife or mother to receive proper, top of the line treatments. To every other American, finances play a great role in the care or type of treatment one will get. All we can do is fight, and try to win the battle. In the end, after it’s all said and done, Cancer Sucks.

I was born in may of 1951. I was the baby of eight children. My father dies when I was 8 months old, which left my mother with eight kids to raise. She tried to keep all of us in school. She only finished 3rd grade so she had no education. All of my brothers and sisters quit when they were sixteen. I quit when I was sixteen and got married. After four marriages and four kids I ended up raising four kids alone. I have tried to get them to stay in school, but I have not been able to. My oldest son is 42 years old. I also, have three daughters. Ages 40, 35 and 32, One of my daughters graduated and went on to college to become a registered nurse, also one went back to scchool and got her GED and the third one is back in school now trying to get her GED. I was 56 years old when I went back to school and got my GED and now I am in college trying to get a degree in accounting. I have five grandchildren, three girls and two boys. My oldest grandaughter turned eighteen and graduated this year. She is also going to go to college this year, she wants to be a nurse also. My oldest daughtter also went back to school and is a CNA2. They all seem to like the medical field. After i complete my two year degree i hope to find a decent job and work till my retirement. I also have three house dogs. One is a Poodle which is twenty years old. She is like part of the family since I have had her so long. They tell me that dogs don’t live that long, but she will be twenty on sept. 19th ,2009. The other twwo dogs are just six and seven years old. One is a Maltese and One is a Jack Russell. So this is my family and an outline of my life.

The best topic I can think of that has been all over the news would have to be the death of Michael Jackson. Everyone has an opinion of him, regardless of whether you listened to his music or not. The reality is he was an awesome entertainer with talent that could not be denied. It is a shame that the media has forgotten a human being lost their life. There are three children who no longer have a father in their lives, biological or not. There are two parents who have lost their son. In life it’s supposed to be the children who bury their parents not the other way around. There are brothers and sisters who have lost their brother. I think people from the outside looking in have forgotten we were only presented with what the media gave us. His family was the ones who have truly lost, not the fans. Fans can always play a CD or watch a video on the internet as a flash back. However, his family has to deal with all the media nitpicking that has been going on since his sudden death. And will resume every year on its anniversary.

At the end of the day, it really does not matter if you liked Michaels’ music, or even his dancing. What really matters is that people give the respect that’s due when someone dies. The media has become so wrapped up in finding out what happened and digging into his past, they have no respect for the family and what the stories put them through. Everyone has made mistakes in their lives, some for the better, some not. But at the end of the day, a person should not be remembered for the accusations made against them. Post-mortem should be the time to celebrate the positive effects made, the people helped and lives changed for the better. Not to belittle someone who cannot speak for themselves.

Writing, whether it is an essay or article for a magazine has a goal to accomplish. The writing has to make the point, presenting evidence in relation to that topic. It also should display organization of the developed points. Creativity and good grammar also have a role, if the essay or article has multiple errors in grammar; the purpose of the writing can be lost. The introduction needs to capture the attention of the reader, encouraging them to read the rest of the written text.

In “The Essay’s Unlimited Possibilities” it was noted: “The thinking mind will analyze, creative imagination will link instances, and time itself will churn out scenes.”

In my reading of the Malcolm X article “Literacy Behind Bars”, I found a side of him that was not expected. I previously considered him to be a man that went through the motions of college life based on how well spoken he was. To find he obtained his education from the books read in prison was inspiring to me. There are people who find themselves in that position and do not take advantage of the opportunity to better themselves. He found motivation by observing the conversations of other prisoners. He realized at that point, drastic improvement was required in order to even be part of the conversation and understand what was being stated. I was drawn to his determination in actually taking time to write every word in the dictionary, learning the meanings and their application. He read at every opportunity up to fifteen hours a day. At night when the guards made their hourly rounds he stated “I would be outraged with the “lights out.” It always seemed to catch me right in the middle of something engrossing.” Considering his circumstances, it would be easy to say he had nothing else to do. However, when you look at the environment he was in, it could have had a much different outcome. One can only wonder what would have been if he did not take the time to read and obtain that vast wealth of knowledge. This article shows a man willing to admit his limitations. Yet more importantly, was willing to take the steps necessary to correct them.

This process has shown me I have to improve my ability to clarify specific points in order to appeal to a broader audience. I have to be willing to show qualities similar to what Alan Lightman stated, “I want to see a mind at work, imaging, spinning, struggling to understand. If the essayist has all the answers, then he isn’t struggling to grasp, and I won’t either.”

Good writing should catch ones attention from beginning to end, whether or not it is a topic of interest to the reader. This means that the writing should have a good thesis; along with good evidence, it should be organized from beginning to end. Lauren Slater agrees saying, “Essay writing is not about facts, although the essay may contain facts. Essay writing is about transcribing the often convoluted process of thought, leaving your own brand of breadcrumbs in the forest so that those who want to can find their way to your door.” It is my understanding that if you start with something good, and maintain a good flow throughout; you will reel in your audience.

In reading “Our Mother’s Face”, I read of a young lady facing the death of her mother. In the story, this young lady had been told that her Mother was very sick, and there was nothing that the Doctors could do to prevent her death. Throughout the story, she was preparing herself for the death of her own mother, and she was doing everything possible to keep her mind off of it until she knew she would have to face the truth. This story shows so much reality. It is sad to know that one day, we are all going to have to go through the loss of a loved one, and how we deal with it is all up to us. In this story, the writer says that at the end of her mother’s life, she was sitting beside her mother begging her to please watch over her, and then her mother passes. After the anticipation of her Mother passing, she has so much pain knowing that her Mother is not going to be around any longer. She later states, “On the table in her room, there was a nineteenth-century brass lamp: an angel holding up a torch of light. When I looked up from our embrace, the light from next to her bed had cast a silhouette of the angel against the white closet doors and I remember thinking to myself that it made perfect sense, that her spirit must have been bone away by angels.” If that doesn’t make you chill, what does?

After digging deep into what I consider a good essay, I find myself in the middle. I know there is always room for improvement, and in my case, there is lots of room for improvement. In order to do this, I need to have great, supporting evidence and organization from start to finish.

Views on writing, unfortunately I ran out of space, so I had to shorten a large amount of it, just barely managed to reduce it to 500 words (quote included)

What exactly is good writing? This question was introduced to me quite recently by my Professor. While thinking of what good writing is I began to come up with many different stories that could be considered good writing. My own personal view that is all encompassing is, good writing is any piece of literature or the like that achieves it’s percieved purpose.

First is fiction. My favorite. If the book is for entertainment then, of course, it must entertain the intended audience. The series I like the most at the moment would most likely have to be the Redwall series. It includes quite a number excellent passages that keep your interest, most of which are too long to put into this but otherwise I do have a small tidbit to add and within almost every one of his books he includes riddles, in the shape of a fixed poem, the main characters are given the task to figure out the answers to these riddles and often times the riddles help the story end in a joyful manner.

“Look not up, nor to the four main points,
But where our paws do tread, the dead oak joints.
There wrought by mother nature ‘neath the main,
Lies that which holds the beauty, or the bane”

Small riddles that keep the story interesting and keep you reading to see what they mean as well as being well integrated into the story is a marvelous way to keep you entertained. Not only do the poems and riddles help keep the story interesting as you go through them but it also adds a bit of mystery into the mix, also if you have read some of the other books some of the riddles can be figured out through prior knowledge giving you a sense of enjoyment.

Besides this there are many types of books and many other types of writing that may be considered good. The other main type of writing I enjoy is informational writing. Writing that gives insight on a particular subject. I personally think that something made to inform someone should be deviod of opinions and should merely state the facts and let you come to your own conclusions based on the facts presented. It may just be my own personal preference but when I wish to know something, any and all extra information merely serves as an obstruction and a waste of time and effort while trying to obtain the knowledge that I seek. So in conclusion I believe good writing is anything that accomplishes its point in the best possible manner depending on whether its fiction or another subject.

My writing I would rate either a four or five at the best of times. Simply because although it does get the point across it doesn’t do it as effectively as it could, as well as mistakes made within the paper that keep it from being as well as it could be.

Most people have to write to do their jobs, homework and communicate on a daily basis. How well we do it is another question. Here`s what I define as good writing. The ability to put thoughts on paper in a clear and orderly way, with few grammar errors as possible, sometimes this is hard to do depending on the subject at hand. I also believe that it has to flow well and make a point and a conclusion. “Writing also should show a mind at work with opinions and points of view.” To use as an example, I recently read a story entitled Us and Them by David Sedaris. The writing was very good it told a tale about a family who`s neighbors did not have a television and though the eyes of the family`s little boy, who wonder how anyone could live without TV.

Here is some of the story that was written in the book. “Word spread that Mr. Tomkey did not own Here is some of the story that was written in the book. “Word spread that Mr. Tomkey did not own a television and you began hearing that while this was all well and good, it was unfair of him to inflict his beliefs upon others, specifically his innocent wife and children. It was speculated that just as the blind man develops a keener sense of hearing, the family must somehow compensate for their loss. “Maybe they read,” my mother`s friend said.”Maybe they listen to the radio, but you can bet your boots they`re doing something.”As the story goes on the author uses several different ways to compare the families and their ways of seeing the world. I picked this passage to show how the one views the family without a TV.

How I view my own writing is that it is a work in progress, meaning that it can have room for improvement. Sometimes, I compare my writing to fourth graders. It`s mainly because I do not use commas and semicolons correctly. Hopefully, I can get to the point where it will be second nature to me to use them. So, If I keep practicing maybe one day I can stand on my own two feet and become a great writer. Until that day comes, I`ll keep on writing to enjoy it. To everyone have a great day.

Good writing is something that comes from within a persons mind. This writing would keep the audience interested and desiring more from the writer. Cynthia Ozick agrees with this also by saying that “A genuine essay has no educational, polemical, or sociopolitical use; it is the movement of a free mind at play.”(pg. 26) I would like to be a good writer by just writing what is on my mind at the time and making it interesting for others to read.

The story that I read Literacy Behind Bars is an example of good writing. In this story it tells about how a man learned to read and understand what he was reading. This story kept a constant flow and gave excellent details. It was interesting enough for the readers to want to finish the reading the story. I especially liked what Malcolm X had to say about reading and understanding what he read. He stated that “No university would ask any student to devour literature, as I did when this new world opened to me, of being able to read and understand.”(pg. 502) This story is a good example to let you know that good writing does not only come from well educated people, but normal everyday people as well can be good writers.

I think that my writing kind of fit this definition. I think I keep a good flow and give some details. However, it may not fit the definition because it may not give enough details and may not be interesting enough for the readers to keep reading and wanting more. After reading Literacy Behind Bars, I have decided give more descriptive details and to make a constant flow in my own writings. After doing this assignment, I have become more aware of what it means to be able to be a good writer. I hope to be a good writer as life goes on. You can only take your lesson in stride and understand what the lesson was and how to use that information.

There are many different definitions to What is good writing? You can only pick the one that you can relate too. Practicing can not hurt, however it can help to make the essay, letter, or the article you are writing better. Just make sure that you understand what good writing is. You also need to know what makes a good essay.
